The Student Language Exchange is a pioneer in diversifying language learning and global engagement at American universities.. To date, we have operated programs in 30+ world languages at Brandeis, Brown, Columbia, Tufts, Vassar and Williams. The “Lift Off” initiative expands our impact from students at our universities to college students nationwide by giving them an incentivized opportunity to express their ambitions related to language learning. This year’s theme is study abroad. We are challenging students to complete the two round contest to demonstrate their commitment to language learning and study abroad through written and video submissions. The top three candidates will receive study abroad scholarships, among other prizes.
Our Goals are specifically designed to further SLE’s mission as well as that of our partners. Together, we can encourage college students across the country to increase their cultural awareness and become globally engaged. Through Lift Off, we aim to:
--> Involve students from every state, from different backgrounds, and from diverse academic institutions
--> Reach 10,000 views on the ‘Lift Off With Language 2015’ webpage
--> Receive 1,000 contest submissions in the first round
Our work is driven by our impact. At our campuses, our fellows work with student groups on a weekly basis to further their understanding of underrepresented target languages, such as Cantonese, Bengali, or Vietnamese, thereby creating invaluable cultural exchanges. Through Lift Off, we aim to expand this work to students around the country by promoting the message that learning languages paves the road to global opportunity, equality, and development.
The Lift Off contest is organized into two rounds, the first of which is designed to attract a large number of candidates, thereby encouraging a cross-section of students to reflect on their goals for language learning, social change, and global engagement. The first round therefore consists of two questions with 250-word limit responses concerned with language learning and study abroad. The second round will require the production of a short video answering a study abroad-related question, and will only be open to the top forty candidates from the first round. The question this year is: “How will your experience with language learning make your adventure abroad life changing?”
We want students to feel engaged, encouraged, and challenged in their educational pursuits by asking them to creatively demonstrate their ambition to conquer a new language and connect with world cultures. The study abroad theme gives students the real-world context to apply their newfound knowledge.
Want to help us increase language learning and cultural awareness through an amazing contest for college students? The Student Language Exchange is seeking partners, advisors, friends and funders to take this next step with us. We are looking for individuals and organizations that support our mission and share our goal to maximize Lift Off’s impact.
In the meantime, keep up with our work by following us on Twitter, like us on Facebook, or sign up to get updates delivered to your inbox and you will be receiving updates about the contest very soon. We hope you are as excited as we are, and wish you happy language learning!
